Scout Badge Blast

“I’ve never been this close to a horse before!”

Show Business Marketing teamed with the new Leatherdale Equine Center at the University of Minnesota, USHJA Zone 6, and sponsors Nutrena, Ariat, Equine Network, and Troxel to create a new event that introduces kids to horses. The Scout Badge Blast is an educational day that includes both fun lectures and hands-on learning based on the specific requirements of the Girl Scouts Horse Fan Badge and the Boy Scout Horsemanship Badge (all unmounted portions).

NARHA member organization, We Can Ride provided quiet, reliable horses. Leaders of the educational sessions included volunteers from the University of Minnesota Veterinary School and Equine Club, members of the USHJA and Minnesota Hunter Jumper Association, the Minnesota High School Equestrian Association, United States Pony Club, local retailers, equine product and feed manufacturers and local professionals.

Three hundred Scouts (and more than 100 adults) enjoyed fun lectures on the purpose and function of riding apparel and careers with horses. There were information centers on books about horses and horse breeds and their specialties. Hands-on learning sessions that included basic horse care/feeding, safety around horses, equipment and tack, grooming, haltering and tying a horse, conformation/parts of the horse, farrier demonstration, common health issues, high tech and horses. During the lunch break there was a  hunter/jumper demonstration and musical performance and sing-a-long.
